Good news for drinkers as recent research shows that moderate drinkers are less likely to develop heart disease and live longer. The study found people who started drinking in middle-age saw an immediate benefit of lower cardiac disease morbidity with no change in mortality after four years.
It also identified a subset of new drinkers who consumed only wine. When compared to drinkers of other type of alcohol, and heavy drinkers, the wine-only drinkers had the most significant reduction in serious heart events. Drinkers of other types of alcohol also had an advantage over non-drinkers, but the difference did not reach statistical significance.
Moderate drinkers had a 38 per cent lower chance of developing heart disease than did their non-drinking counterparts, even if they were overweight, had diabetes or high blood pressure.
smoking:
Smoking does not make you happy and is associated with poor quality of life.Smokers experienced lower average levels of pleasure and life satisfaction compared with non-smokers. The difference was even more pronounced in smokers from lower socio-economic groups.
People may feel like they are getting pleasure when they smoke a cigarette but in fact smokers are likely to be less happy overall, the pleasure they feel from having a smoke comes only because they're addicted. Anyone thinking of giving up smoking should understand that quitting will be better for them in terms of their well-being as well as their phsical health in the long run.
